How do I get videos I upload to work on Windows Media Player?

I'm trying to make a DVD, but I can only make videos work if they are from windows media player. I've uploaded videos from my camera (it's just a regular camera), but they refuse to play with Windows Media Player. It's all black, but the sound works. They'll work with VLC media player, but the dvd maker won't except videos from VLC. All the videos from everyone else's cameras works on Windows Media Player, why won't mine? Is there a way I can make them work with WMP?
