Is there something I can add to my washer that will put absorbency into my smooth cotton dishtowels?

Have a pretty set of three that don't absorb, after several regular washings. I know not to use a fabric softener, neither in the washer nor dryer, but is there a household additive for the wash that will cause them to absorb?
